"Come on, Mal," the Dark wolf Nakiti said gently to her pup. "I suppose we'll spend the night in these caves."
Nakiti had never been part of a pack, had never had anybody at all for most of her life. Her parents had been two lone wolves who died when she was just a pup. Then she had to fend for herself, until one day, she met another Dark wolf, Nadir, and she had been sure she would spend the rest of her life with him. But he had been killed by hunters, and Mal's sister had died just after birth. Mal was the only link between her and her lost love. He was a white pup, though both his parents had been black, and he had a curious black marking on his chest, shaped somewhat like a heart. His tiny red wings were folded tightly against his back, a strange cross between his mother's black angel wings and his father's black bat wings. His element was fire, and when he stretched his wings out, the small streaks of orange could be seen, and the small, light coating of feathers from his mother's angel wings.
Nakiti's own pelt was black, and she had huge black angel wings with red streaks. She could also turn into a raven, though she hadn't for months.
Now, laying down in the cave, Mal at her side, Nakiti prepared herself for the dreams.
She was running through the forest, Nadir at her side, and there was a human machine in the sky above them, firing tiny pieces of metal at them to try to kill them.
"Split up!" Nadir cried, dodging another shot. "Don't let them get you! The pups!"
"I don't want to leave you! What if they get you?"
"I'll be fine! Just save the pups!"
Nakiti ran off to the left, and within minutes she heard a cry from Nadir and saw the machine fly away. She doubled back, running as fast as she could.
She found Nadir lying on the ground, clinging to the last of his life. She sat down beside him, whispering his name.
"Nadir.. Nadir.. please don't leave me, you're the first one to really be there for me.."
"I'm sorry.." he whispered. "I'll always love you.."
And as she felt his spirit leave him, she raised her head and howled, a sound of sorrow and unbearable loss.
Nakiti woke with a start, seeing the other wolves still sleeping, and feeling Mal beside her. She put her head back down, but knew she would not sleep again that night.
((Sorry about the length, but I wanted to explain a little bit about her past.))
